Description
Compassion is an emotion motivating a desire to help in response to suffering or need.
While primarily emotional, the word ‘compassion’ also has a strong rational basis in notions such as fairness, justice and interdependence. The word derives from Latin, meaning “co-suffering.” Compared to empathy, compassion implies more involvement and a stronger desire to help others in need.
In many philosophies and religions it is considered to be an important virtue. It has been linked, for example, to the Golden Rule: Do to others what you would have them do to you.
Compassion is important for animal welfare. A well-known animal protection organization is called ‘Compassion in World Farming‘.
